Building Inspection Division Improves ISO Ratings
November 27, 2018
The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) performed a comprehensive evaluation of the City’s building code adoption and enforcement program earlier this year and recently issued their classification ratings. On a classification scale between 1 and 10, with a “1” being the best, the City’s Building Inspection Division received a Class “4” for residential properties and a Class “4” for commercial and industrial properties.
This year’s rating showed an improvement for residential properties, up from a Class “5” rating in the City’s 2012 survey. There was no change for commercial and industrial properties between the 2012 and the 2018 survey. The ISO evaluation is performed every five years for building departments in participating municipalities on behalf of insurance companies across the United States.
“The ISO survey is fairly rigorous and focuses mainly on our staff training, certifications, plan reviews and field inspections,” said Brett Penrose, Building Official. “They also evaluate our policies and procedures, our recordkeeping and whether we are keeping our building codes up to date. The survey serves as a great tool for our program by identifying strengths and showing us areas where we need to make improvements.”
